CORVALLIS - Spring football practices being a time to experiment, Oregon State has some of that in mind for the 15 workouts that begin this afternoon for the Beavers.

How about an offensive formation where the quarterback lines up at wide receiver, and the running back takes a direct snap from center?

"Yeah, that would be kind of fun," OSU coach Mike Riley said. "I think we'll explore that."

The Beavers prepared to defend what is often called the "Wildcat" formation before the Sun Bowl, knowing that Pittsburgh often had running back LeSean McCoy taking the center snap directly. The Beavers were successful in handling McCoy in any and all alignments by the Panthers, but what kind of problems might it cause opponents if Quizz Rodgers was in the "Wildcat" featured spot?

"There's no reason Quizz couldn't do that," Riley said.

Rodgers is likely to be held out of full-contact drills after recovering from a shoulder injury that prevented him from playing the final two games of OSU's 9-4 season, but there...
