For the past 10 years, first-time juvenile offenders in the West Eugene Teen Court have had the right to truly face a jury of their peers.

Not to mention the ability to have an offense erased from their records after six months.

Teen Court, a program developed by the Lane County Department of Youth Services, actually tried its first case in Eugene on Nov. 13, 1997, thanks to its Bethel branch, which operates out of Petersen Barn near Royal Avenue. The West Eugene Teen Court, which will make note of its 10th anniversary after hearing cases on Wednesday, meets at Eugene Bible College on Bailey Hill Road.

Youths who have gone through the system say being told what they did was wrong by a group of their peers can have a tremendous impact.
