Note-taking is particularly important if your teacher or lecturer is competent, capable or talented. However, note-taking is even more important if your teacher or lecturer is incompetent or in error. Unfortunately, when this is the case, many students put down their pens in frustration, sometimes while muttering curses under their breath, at precisely the time when they should be diligently recording this information.
This information is crucial if the teacher or lecturer is your examiner. This is because they will be assessing your work against their concept of what the right answer is, and not against any other potentially right answers. Therefore, to achieve straight "A"s, this information is indispensable and you must have it at your disposal.
Despite what most people would ideally like to be the case, you are likely to be rewarded for reflecting your teacher's mistakes and penalised for correcting them. It is vital to your success that your submitted work reflects as closely as possible your examiner's understanding of the topic.
To help you effectively comprehend and achieve this task, I have developed what I term the analogy of the "black shoe".
