An admission: I began to question our forum's subtitle almost as soon as it was set in bureaucratic stone. Was asking people to speak about working on living artists not a bit like inviting them to describe the best way to set an artist's femur? Did the phrase make the subject into too direct an object, the task into too arm's-length an enterprise? Suzanne Hudson and I had intentionally sought out speakers who would not take such an approach, and as their papers began to arrive the phrase seemed less and less appropriate. To a person, the panelists were unusually frank and involved--no latex gloves in sight.

Most readers do not dwell much on titles, of course--and even now, in writing out my nagging, low-level irritation, I risk exaggerating my concern. In...
