Spotted Turtle Activity and Movements in Southwestern Michigan. Jessica Gradel and John W. Rowe, Alma College, Biology Department, Alma, MI 48801

We used radiotelemetry to study habitat use, activity and movements of Spotted Turtles (Clemmys guttata) in a southwestern Michigan wetland during the summer and fall of 2006. When diurnally active, turtles most frequently occupied Hooded deer trails and adjacent grass and sedge habitats and less frequently used forest pools and streams. Turtles were found in water that was less than 35 cm deep (mean = 5 cm). Based on movements measured between radiolocations of two consecutive days, turtles on average moved between about 2 m and 40 m in June and August with a depression of activity during most of July.
