This week, I'm in a science park. Remember those? Every red-brick new town in Britain had one somewhere on its outskirts. If we ever drove past a sign for one when I was a kid I got excited, imagining anti-gravity rollercoasters and holographic dodgems, but Dad would never take me to one. Good job, too, because it turns out a science park is just a place where IT companies go to rent cheap office space. What a let-down.

Thank God they exist, though. The brains of Britain belong in places like this, not financial skyscrapers. Take Lotus - a bunch of lads so bad at money they're now majority-owned by Proton, a Malaysian company that ranks somewhere with Kia and Perodua.

But they're so good at engineering that they practically invented the modern wings-and-spoilers look of Formula One cars and won the constructors' championship seven times. When Ayrton Senna was at the wheel, very little could pass a Lotus. I was desperate...
