IN HIS LATEST BOOK, THE EDGE OF Evolution (now out in paperback), Michael Behe asserts that Darwinism--which he defines as the evolutionary mechanism of biological mutation and natural selection--is insufficient to account for the many complexities found in nature. He attempts to make his case, for the most part, using an examination of the nature and history of malaria, the advent and effect of the sickle cell, and the complexity of the bacterial flagellum. His main argument is that the workings of Darwin's theory do not provide for the biological development of such organisms beyond the simplest changes. He also asserts that there are evolutionary variations that should be expected, according to Darwinian theory, and such alterations fail to appear, further demonstrating the insufficiency of natural selection.
