In the April 7 election, candidates are vying for St. Charles aldermen in the third and fourth wards. Candidates were asked to complete a questionnaire; some edited excerpts from their answers are given below. For more on the races, visit our "Election 2009" page at dailyherald.com.

Third ward

The Third ward candidates are incumbent William Turner and challenger Todd Veyette.

Q. Name the three most important goals or objectives this board should tackle in the coming term. Prioritize them and briefly discuss why you believe each to be critical, and how the board should go about addressing them.

Turner: The three top goals as I see them are: To have fiscally responsible budgets that do not increase our property taxes and that will attract high-quality businesses. To continue efforts to streamline city government and lower the cost of operations and to ensure both residential and commercial developments are appropriate to the neighborhood in which they are located and will increase tax revenue so as to decrease our reliance on the property tax.
