Philip Bertolini had a problem: a shrinking information-technology budget and a need for more computing power.

The director of information technology for Oakland County said the solution was right in front of him - at each computer the county already owns.

Rather than scrap older personal computers, the county plans to network them with one server to harness the computing power of the PCs through a process called "thin client.''

The server houses all of the software applications, stored information and computing power, thus creating a network of "dumb'' terminals that tap into the system when needed.

Thin client allows an organization like Oakland County to replace one powerful server as opposed to hundreds of computers.
