This 288-page volume can be thought of as encompassing two sections. The first 154 pages are divided into nine chapters in which the author identifies eight noncognitive variables (i.e., positive self-concept, realistic self-appraisal, successfully handling the system, preference for long-term goals, availability of strong support system, leadership experience, community involvement, and knowledge acquired in a field) and describes a system of assessing these variables and using them in a range of settings, including admissions, teaching, advising, and counseling.
