Gene Andrew Jarrett, the editor o f African American Literature Beyond Race: An Alternative Reader, has gathered a generous variety of what he calls "anomalous literature" by African American writers with the ambition of creating a new field of inquiry in literary studies. That field would address the unheralded tradition of African American writing that has no explicit focus on the black experience. The collection, as a result, covers more than a century and a half of literary enterprise.
