Over forty years have passed since the coining of Black Power, the founding of the Black Panther Party, the raging of bloody riots that tore apart Detroit, Oakland, Newark and, in the ultimate signal of the passing of the Civil Rights Movement, the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King. By the time Elaine Brown stepped down as the chair of the Black Panther Party in 1981, the organization's legacy was already under erasure. The party ideology was dismissed as bombast, the organization criticized for the absence of a concrete plan, and the leaders mocked as impotent, espousing violence but never leading the way to revolution. While the intervening years have brought no consensus about this tumultuous and dynamic period in American history, scholars, critics, activists, artists, marketers, and others continue to mine the amorphous legacy of Black Power, co-opting its legacy for their own purposes.
