Mike Keenan never has been about X's and O's. Just watch the Calgary Flames drill sergeant: While his assistants conduct practice, "Iron Mike" stands at the red line barking instructions like, "Move, move -harder, harder," madly slapping his stick against the boards like he's trying to swat a fly.

What Keenan is about is motivation. In fact, he's the master motivator, using every trick in the book.

Some players take to it; some players succumb to it.

Olli Jokinen took to it. When Jokinen was traded by the Islanders to Florida in 2000 with Roberto Luongo for Mark Parrish and Oleg Kvasha, Jokinen was the throw-in, an afterthought. He was considered lazy, overweight and a third overall bust in an exceptional 1997 draft that featured Joe Thornton, Patrick Marleau, Luongo, Marian Hossa and Brenden Morrow.

About the only person who didn't consider Jokinen a "project" was...
