SALEM - Wealthy Oregonians would pay higher taxes under three bills considered Friday by the House Revenue Committee.

The increases would hit only those with six-figure incomes. That's less than 2 percent of Oregonians, so more than 98 percent of state residents would not see their income tax rates rise if any of the bills pass this session.

But even with targeting such a small fraction of taxpayers, the bills would generate between $160 million and $290 million in two years. By comparison, the state faces a projected budget shortfall of $3 billion for the 2009-11 biennium. If it taps all of the one-time money available from state...
