SPRINGFIELD - Tim Moran played basketball at Springfield Middle School with other teachers and administrators last week, just as he had done many Friday afternoons. Recently, though, he hadn't been able to make the workouts regularly, principal Jeff Mather said.

After three or four games, Moran, coordinator of the school district's Community Transition Program for special-needs youth ages 16 to 21, complained of feeling nauseated. He left early.

They chalked it up to the fact he hadn't played in a while, and that he'd had a virus recently, Mather said.

That was the last time he and the others would see Moran. He was dead within 24 hours at age 49 of a suspected heart attack that has yet to be confirmed. His 12-year-old son, Dillon, tried to wake him a week ago today at their south Eugene home, but he was already gone.

His sudden death has left a void in the district, and far beyond.

Timothy John Moran appears to have been one of those "six degrees of separation" people who touched countless lives. Everyone knew him, or knew someone who knew him. Everyone loved him.
