Earlier this month, the Denny's restaurant chain offered all comers a free breakfast.

Then, the IHOP chain offered any takers a free short stack of pancakes.

Now comes the Save-A-Lot grocery chain, with a free bag of groceries - spaghetti, pasta sauce, two canned veggies and garlic bread - this morning at its nine Pacific Northwest stores, including at 4223 Main St. in Springfield. The company said it will hand out 4,000 of the bags at each of its nine stores in the region.

Food giveaways are hardly a new marketing strategy by retailers and grocery stores. But they're drawing extra attention in an economic downturn...
