A legislative proposal for paid family leave looks great on paper: Oregon workers would contribute 2 cents per hour into a pool that would provide $300 a week to people who need up to six weeks away from their jobs to care for sick relatives or newborn children. But the plan offers reason to be nervous about costs, adequacy and fairness. The Legislature should test the practicality of the idea by creating a voluntary pilot program.
