Ruby Hurley may not be as well-known as Martin Luther King Jr. or Malcolm X, but she made her own key contributions to the civil rights movement: Among other accomplishments, she opened the first NAACP office in the Deep South.

That's why Hurley is among 12 civil rights pioneers immortalized in a series of postage stamps released by the U.S. Postal Service in conjunction with the Feb. 12 centennial of the founding of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

The stamps will be unveiled locally prior to the NAACP Eugene-Springfield chapter's annual Freedom Fund dinner and dance, slated for tonight at Valley River Inn. At a ceremony sponsored by the U.S. Postal Service, the public will be able to purchase cancelled copies of the stamps.
