DELON ARMITAGE has never forgotten the wounding words of rejection: 'Sorry, son, you're too small and too skinny. You won't make it.' One day he would show those French how wrong they were -- and that day finally dawns tomorrow at Twickenham where the London Irishman lines up against France, eager to confirm his status as England's discovery of an otherwise trying season. The occasion will drive Armitage to settle a personal score like no other during his roundabout route from Trinidad to HQ.

Of all the twists and turns, none proved more telling than the French coaches deciding he did not measure up after picking him for an Under-16 match against Spain in Nice nine years ago -- and despite a word-perfect rendition of La Marseillaise.

A more positive judgment that day and Armitage might conceivably have been singing it again this weekend with a yellow cockerel emblazoned on a blue jersey, instead of a red rose...
