Our name identifies us and gives us meaning, purpose, and character. When I taught senior nursing students, I used to explain to them that identifying themselves as senior nursing students rather than just "nursing students" portrayed a different meaning to patients. It gave patients a sense that a senior nursing student knew more and could give patient care at a higher level of functioning beyond entry-level students. This same concept applies to the title of a registered nurse (RN) versus a licensed practical nurse (LPN) or a medical assistant. All are important members of the healthcare team, but by virtue of a name, the patient has expectations of varied levels of care and abilities. It becomes a disservice to patients when a physician refers to the medical assistant in the office as a "nurse."
