When the Surety & Fidelity Association Model Contractor Development Program (MCDP) launched in 2007, organizers worried that nobody would show up for the first class. Two years later, the program has "graduated" nearly 250 firms, and the registration list for classes is growing exponentially.

"I am so proud of this program, said Richard Speights, director of the Minority & Small Business Development Division of the Mississippi Development Authority (MDA), which oversees the program. "And, the program is still in its infancy."

The Surety & Fidelity Association (SFAA) Model Contractor Development Program was established to help small, minority- and women-owned firms land federal, state and local government contracts. Particularly, the MCDP looks to help this firm overcome a major hurdle--bonding.
