Humor, like beauty, is subjective, and just a few degrees of tilt can alter the effect. "Napoleon Dynamite" was a surprise hit because the deadpan satire of small-town life had an undertone of sympathy for the uncool. Director Jared Hess paints with the same cartoonish palette in his follow-up, "Nacho Libre," but without a sympathetic hero, the effect is just ugly.
