Stefan Voss and David L. Woodruff lay out the scope of this book in their preface to the first (2002) edition, which is reproduced in the present edition: "... to provide models that capture many of the details faced by firms operating in a modern supply chain, but we stop short of proposing models for economic analysis of the entire supply chain. In other words we produce models that are useful for planning within a supply chain rather than models for planning the supply chain" (p. vi). That statement applies equally well to the present second edition, which contains much of the material of the first edition, plus additional new material based on the authors' experience and feedback from using the text in different courses and locations.
