The authors of An Introduction to Efficiency and Productivity Analysis are staff members of the Center for Efficiency and Productivity Analysis at the University of Queensland, Australia. The first edition, published in 1998, grew out of the notes for short courses the authors offered to a number of government agencies in Australia in the 1990s. The first edition's good reception and major advances in measuring efficiency and productivity compelled the authors to publish this second edition.

The authors introduce the four major methods economists use to analyze efficiency and productivity: econometric estimation of average response, index numbers, data envelopment analysis (DEA), and stochastic frontier analysis.
