Suppliers of bar-code readers and other automatic identification (auto id) systems have moved away from their historical reliance on proprietary technology, theoretically making it easier for companies to take full advantage of the information gathered via bar-code readers and other devices. But widespread adoption of open data collection networks has been slowed by users' reluctance to abandon the scores of proprietary devices already installed in factories and warehouses.

That fact has prompted one supplier of data collection terminals to create a software package it believes will quicken the industry's movement into an era in which virtually all data collection devices can automatically transfer information to enterprise-level business systems.
