Home Depot Inc. is a long way from maxing out growth prospects in its core business. With nearly 1,500 big-box stores, or about twice as many as its runner-up competitor, Lowes Cos., the giant retailer of hardware and other home improvement products scheduled 200 store openings in 2002 and a heady pace of new units in the next few years. Yet, with competition heating up and an eventual growth plateau possible, the company isn't above hedging its bets early by opening new merchandising and service channels without going far afield from basic operations.
