Article Excerpt Enterprise resources planning (ERP) systems are the transaction backbone for todays manufacturers, with a footprint that began in material requirements planning and spread into financials, human resources, distribution, and, more recently, customer relationship and supplier relationship management. Many ERP solutions vendors say they also have capabilities for managing plant-floor operations.
On the other hand, for more than a decade, a somewhat disparate group of software application vendors has offered what AMR Research, Boston, calls manufacturing execution systems. Execution systems track work-in-process, gather time-series product information, and support a range of production management functions based on the needs of the industry in which it is used.
