While its name may conjure up images of a decidedly low-tech operation, Horizon Organic Dairy is the epitome of the so-called virtual enterprise.

From its headquarters in Boulder, Colo., Horizon coordinates a far-flung network of farms, processing plants, and transportation providers that supply more than $180 million worth of organic dairy products--milk, eggs, yogurt, etc.--to U.S. retail outlets each year.

"We are 100-percent outsourced," says Horizon CIO Karl Bruce. "It's particularly challenging because our products have a short shelf life ... and this is a low-margin business. We have to manage the flow of materials without delay, and we can't afford to have too much or too little in the pipeline."
