Several pharmaceutical firms lately have introduced or strengthened meetings policies, particularly regarding site selection, elevating further the industry's standing as the most advanced in terms of meetings management.

Nearly all of the recent moves by pharmaceutical companies were accompanied by formal, written policies, at a level that exceeds the preponderance of meetings policies in other industries. Many of the pharmaceutical firms policies include mandates and penalties for noncompliance that compel internal meeting sponsors to choose only approved venues and purchase services only from preferred meetings management companies.

"The pharmaceutical companies we work with are very formal and mandated," said Dick Zeller, vice president of consolidation solutions at meetings management firm Maritz McGettigan.
