More travel professionals become eligible for bonuses.

The number of travel managers and travel buyers who are able to earn bonuses and other pay perks grew tremendously in the past year, according to the results of BTN's annual Travel Manager Salary & Attitude Survey.

Of the corporate travel managers who responded to this year's survey, about 63 percent indicated they earn bonuses and/or incentives--a giant leap of nearly 54 percent compared with the results of the 2003 survey, which showed that only 41 percent of responding managers earned bonuses.

Travel buyers saw a comparable increase--about 48 percent--as 59 percent of those respondents said they are eligible for bonuses and other income extras. Last year, only 40 percent of responding buyers were able to do so.

For the seventh consecutive year, cost savings/avoidance was the top reason cited by travel managers and buyers, roughly 60 percent for both, for their bonus awards. Yet, a flat 47 percent of travel managers, as well as 42 percent of the buyers, said their ability to earn bonuses and other income extras is partly dependent on their department's performance. Of those reliant on departmental productivity, the overwhelming majority, about 90 percent of managers and 85 percent of buyers, said they are compensated with bonuses, rather than incentives or stock options.
