As it celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, BJ's Wholesale Club keeps on proving that bigger is not always better.

The nation's third largest wholesale club continues to not only survive and thrive among its larger rivals, but also outpace them in growth (see chart below).

Based in Natick, MA, BJ's now operates 151 clubs including 16 "small box" units of about 70,000 sq. ft. in areas of lower population density. The big box clubs average 112,000 sq. ft., while the new prototype is 115,000-120,000 sq. ft.
