Article Excerpt When Dorvin Leis started a plumbing company in Pasadena, Calif., in 1960, he probably never counted on being the largest contractor in the state. The state of Hawaii, that is.
"I came over in 1967 for Travelodge and built its first hotel in Lahaina," Leis said. "I had done Travelodge work for the company's trailer park entity in California. That's how I got to Maui." Dorvin liked the look of Maui and, after working from San Jose to San Diego and into Arizona as a California-based contractor, he figured Maui would be the perfect place to slow down a little and finish raising the last of his three children.
"It didn't slow down, though," he joked. "It continued to get worse."
