Transient travelers and meeting planners will be sharing Manhattan with the Republican National Committee this summer, so conventional Wisdom--no pun intended--applies more than ever. Plan ahead, come early, consider your alternatives and have a back-up just in case.

Even before the Republicans, the security personnel, the press and the protesters take to Manhattan in late-August, occupancies and rates in the Big Apple have been on the rise. In historic terms, though, New York still is a bargain in 2004, according to PKF Consulting's John Fox. That's especially true for global meetings, as the conversion rate of the talling dollar helps make even more competitive with European venues.

Industry observers believe that even the combined traffic of the Republican convention and the U.S. Open tennis finals scheduled for the same time period will not impact too heavily on the corporate market, as the last week of August is one...
