Publishers Become Marketers as Ad Pages Tumble in H1 '09

As we kick off our quarterly coverage of group publishers ad-page boxscores, we see no surprises--double-digit losses for the first half of 2009 are the norm. In a replay of our monthly totals, the losses for the first half of the year among the top 15 publishers (ranked by ad page counts) generally fall between 25% and 35% (see boxscores on page 2). Penton Media and Reed Business Information traded places at the top of the ad-page rankings, compared to the first quarter's group publishers ranking (see June 1, 2009, issue of min's b2b), with RBI books taking a larger -39.41% hit. But there are still signs of hope among the IMS/The Auditor group publishers figures.

A recently leaked memo (per Dow Jones Newswire) from RBI Global CEO Keith Jones warned of a "difficult" 2010. He was quoted saying that the publishing unit needs "additional cost-cutting fast" and that "some things must be done differently or not at all." Jones told staffers the aim...
