Looking Past 'Lost Year,' Hanley Wood Awaits Housing Rebound

In an emergency, everyone reaches for lifesavers of all kinds--and for new adjectives and metaphors. Speaking with media executives for min's b2b's continuing coverage of first-quarter group publishers data has become a linguistic exercise, as most of us look for new ways to describe the precipitous drop in advertising and the signs of a rebound.

"It's kind of a bloodbath," says Peter Goldstone, president of Hanley Wood. The 23 titles IMS/The Media Audit counts in the construction publisher's catalog showed a 37.50% decline in Q1 compared with the year-ago period. HW gets a double-whammy from two of the hardest-hit areas of the economy, residential housing and automotive, the latter of which touches Goldstone's books in the trucking segment.

In gauging the trends for the year, Goldstone says "the first quarter was totally irrelevant--the whole economy was frozen."
