South Africa has a range of bulk and fine distributors competing to offer the fastest, most transparent and best value service to pharmaceutical companies and end users. There are only three companies that cover the whole of the country--the others have a more regional focus.

Until the mid 1990s, the South African distribution model followed the traditional system whereby a pharmaceutical company dealt directly with the wholesaler, and the wholesaler with the dispensing doctor or pharmacist.
