FIRST TIER FOCUS: Building a better engine.

As a self-confessed petrol head and entrepreneur it is maybe not surprising that Craig Fletcher is the owner of a company that designs and makes engines. What is perhaps surprising is the type of engine he is making. Andy Sandford reports.

Cubewano was set up to produce very small, light and powerful engines for numerous military and commercial applications. It has created a range of fuel injected Wankel rotary engines that produce up to 7.5 horsepower from an engine that weighs just 3.5kg. These engines are made using novel production methods and materials, and are the result of extensive market research, a year-long development programme and some tightly guarded intellectual property (IP).

Cubewano's owner Craig Fletcher says: 'I've always been mad on engines - I have tuned the engine of every car I've ever owned. I started off racing and tuning model planes at the age of eleven and since then I've raced boats, cars, go-carts - I am the definitive petrol head.' Following a brief brush with paid employment he has also played to his entrepreneurial strengths and maverick nature. 'I'm not very good at being told what to do. After university I was an employee for about six months and since then I was always a contractor or a consultant paid by the hour.'
