In the first week of April, yet more evidence of global warming emerged when satellite pictures revealed that an ice shelf, measuring 14,000 square kilometers, is splintering off of the Antarctic Peninsula. While the US is behind the curve as it relates to climate control, President Barack Obama, since taking office, has been pushing for change, heralding the possibility of a cap-and-trade system as a potential solution to climate change.

The president even used his speech in front of a joint session of Congress in February to ask lawmakers for cap-and-trade legislation in order to drive "more renewable energy," emphasizing "That's what we need."
