As private equity investors await the return of credit, the public market doesn't have much to offer investors, at least not in the way of traditional taking-private transactions. For LBO shops willing to put in a little more work, however, public market companies are increasingly testing the waters for possible divestitures.
Sara Lee Corp., for instance, is exploring strategic alternatives for its European-based international household and body care unit, a process that will undoubtedly attract interest from financial sponsors. In March, meanwhile, Barclays Capital confirmed it is engaged in discussions to sell its iShares trading business to London private equity house CVC Capital Partners. And Fifth Third Bancorp, that same month, sold the bulk of its transaction processing unit to Boston private...
