Value of b2b M&A Deals Declined 91% in First Quarter.

The b2b media business has had its share of downs and really downs in this current economy, and this negative trend has extended to M&A activity. Trade magazines and trade show deals were down 14% and their dollar values dropped 91% in first quarter of 2009 compared to the first quarter of 2008, as reported by merger and acquisition advisory firm Whitestone Communications Inc. (see chart below). The total dollar value of the first-quarter 2009 b2b M&A deals were $42 million; last year the total value for the first quarter was $448 million. In the fourth quarter of 2008 there were 21 deals valued at $73 million.
