LOS ANGELES -- Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, one of the premier pivot players in NBA history, understands about learning curves -- and the ridiculously steep bend Andrew Bynum tries to negotiate.

The Los Angeles Lakers special assistant to coach Phil Jackson is empathetic as the young center tries to re-establish himself as a reliable force in the NBA Finals after injuries sidelined him for 32 games in the second half this season.

Minus the injuries, Abdul-Jabbar said he went through a similar education.
