QUALITY: Training for quality.

The NPL's training initiative for manufacturing companies continues to develop; the dimensional programme is now well established, with electrical and temperature measurement next on the agenda.

The NPL training framework is often perceived as addressing only dimensional measurement, says Tom Ashby, Business Development Manager for NPL Training. 'And that's hugely important, but it represents a small fraction of NPL's capability' he explains. 'The training framework is a model into which we can bring many disciplines, and it doesn't make sense to concentrate on one topic. The job at NPL is much bigger than developing training around dimensional measurement; we are looking at developing new modules in electrical measurement, temperature measurement, large volume metrology, calibration.'

NPL Training has been running its Dimensional Measurement Programme for three years. Training is delivered through accredited third parties, within a framework which incorporates a 'four level' qualification structure related to the experience, knowledge and specific job functions of the trainees:
