The deep double-digit ad-page declines throughout the building and construction segment come as no surprise (see boxscores below), but every segment of the vast industry these books represent has its own story to tell.
Construction Equipment (-46.23% YTD compared to the same period last year, -55% March) actually was not doing half bad a year ago, says Rick Blesi, the director of the title and of Midwest Media for Reed Construction Media. The March declines represent ad falloff from last March's triennial trade show, but it was shortly after that when the "global equipment market fell off a cliff," he says. International spending on construction equipment had been masking some of the domestic woes, but when the Chinese market started shutting down last year everything went south. "I feel we are at a bottom, and it is just a matter of when will we feel it in terms of marketing. With any luck, we will see an end by the end of 2009."
Also detecting (hoping for?) a bottom is the team in a very different area...
