At the public libraries where I work, you can generally see all parts of the library from any part of the library. They're that small. The idea of roaming reference is not one that our patrons are clamoring for. However, there are many other sorts of mobility that are important to the way we deliver services. Many of these can be added to your library without an incredible amount of hassle or cost.

I'll be talking about three aspects of mobility in this article: patron mobility, web content mobility, and a small diversion into accessibility and mobility.

Patron Mobility

When I read the terms of the Google Books settlement, which proposed putting a single, dedicated Google Books terminal in every public library (upon request), my first thought was: where? Our libraries are full of computers, and the only way we've been able to get more computing ability to our patrons is through having a laptop-lending program and a wireless network.
