Small town success: Broulim's Supermarkets is upgrading its new stores while maintaining focus on customer service, quality and value.

When Retail Merchandiser caught up with Richard Broulim, president and CEO of Broulim's Supermarkets, after the Thanksgiving holidays, he was at home. "We're building a float for the midnight parade tonight," he explained.

Midnight parade? "It's a Santa Claus comes to town kind of thing," he said. "All the [local] merchants do it, all the stores stay open until midnight, and our stores give out free hot chocolate."

Such is the start of the Christmas season in Rigby, Idaho, where small-town traditions that may have faded from memory in many other places still thrive. "People in Idaho like the family lifestyle," Broulim says, pointing to their love of outdoor activities and community involvement. "And we're just a little family-owned grocery."

Broulim's Supermarkets was founded in 1922 by Richard's father Charlie, in Rigby, where the chain is still headquartered. Richard bought the business following graduate school in Chicago, and has recently expanded it, largely through acquisition, to 10 stores in southeast Idaho, in towns like Montpelier, Roberts, Driggs, St. Anthony, Rexburg, Soda Springs and Shelley. "We have grown dramatically by buying stores in eight different communities," Broulim explains.
