Employers struggle to understand their role in managing their employees' health.

Even though many employers believe there is a link between an employee's health and his or her productivity, many still seem reluctant to step in and take an active role in managing that employee's health, according to a recent poll commissioned by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (BCBSNC).

In June of this year, BCBSNC surveyed more than 400 of the employers it covers and asked a series of questions related to employee health, productivity, intervention, and costs. Among other things, the survey wanted to know if employers believe they should play a role in their employee's health and wellness beyond providing health insurance, and if so, what policies or programs should be offered to support those employees. The survey also wanted to uncover what barriers exist when it comes to implementing health and wellness programs in the workplace.
