Good communication and collaboration: these are two strong points at Bernard Chaus Inc., the New York City-based apparel firm that designs, sources and markets women's career and casual sportswear, principally under the Josephine Chaus Collection, Bernard Chaus Inc., Josephine Chaus Studio, Josephine Chaus Essentials and Josephine Chaus Sport trademarks.
Teamwork between the design, sales and production areas is "very critical" to the company's success, says Ed Eskew vice president of technology.

The design team has its own ideas about what will be hot for a given season; salespeople also have their ears to the ground via their buyers; but in the final analysis, the production side has to be sure that garments are cost-effective to make.
"In many companies that collaboration is missing, which means lost sales and could result in a very difficult season," says Eskew. "Designers may leave the sales team out, or sales leaves out production....
