American Express' announcement late last year of its PreferredExtras Hotel Program, which it said is designed to guarantee North American corporate travel customers the lowest available hotel rates at 1,400 locations globally among certain preferred hotel partners, likely has industry ramifications that have not yet been felt in the hotel consortia rate programs offered by travel agency networks and others.

"In response to the changing operating environment and the accelerated fluidity in airline and hotel pricing caused by unsteady capacity and demand," wrote American Express in its annual report. "The company consulted with customers regarding the growing need to develop new, more fluid purchasing models. These new models attempt to utilize negotiated annual corporate rates for airline and hotel inventory often on short notice or on a last-minute basis."
