Just as the global economy encourages free trade among countries, the emergence of a new crop of interdisciplinary educational facilities is fostering a more vibrant exchange of information and ideas across related disciplines. One of the most significant new structures to exemplify this building approach is the Sir Henry Wellcome Manchester Interdisciplinary Biocentre in Manchester, England.

Designed by the London office of Anshen+Allen, the 150,000-sq.-ft., $74.4-million Biocentre was created to support interactive research and postgraduate training in five scientific areas--the physical sciences, engineering, computer science, mathematics, and biology--which previously had been conducted in different buildings on the campus of the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST).
