A researcher from George Washington University said workers and their dependents with serious alcohol problems cost employers billions of dollars annually in health care costs, lost productivity, and missed work time. Nevertheless, health plans do a poor job of identifying and treating employees and their dependents with drinking problems, according to research. Employer-sponsored health plans also do a poor job of identifying and treating employees with chemical dependency and mental health problems.
